- According to his gravestone, Bolen was born 24 November 1798. Other sources say the year was 1800.
He moved from Virginia to Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa, in 1839. He appeared there in the 1856 census:
Bolen Ping, age 54, male, married, 15 years in Iowa, born in Virginia, occupation farmer.
Sapha Ping, age 54, female, married, 15 years in Iowa, born in Kentucky.
Nancy Ann Ping, age 14, female, born in Iowa.
Robert G. Ping, age 10, male, born in Iowa.
Bolen's residence in 1872 was noted as Yellow Spring Township, Des Moines County, Iowa, where he died on 4 April 1878.
"Bolen Ping Sr. came to Iowa and settled in Franklin township, Des Moines County, in 1839. He was twice married, this last wife being the widow of Garter Barnes. The old couple moved to Yellow Springs township in 1872 and lived and died in the 1870's where Joshua Hedges now lives. Two of his sons, Elija and William, came in 1867 and 1868. Elija was a Baptist preacher of the predestinarian sect and filled the pulpit at the Stone church for a number of years. He owned and lived on the farm where J. S. Heizer now lives, and died there in 1884. His wife was Sarah Cocayne. She lives in Franklin township. William came in 1868 and bought the Oliver Blair farm of Oliver Johnson and still lives on it. He married Paulina Orr in 1849. They have five children. Bolen died in 1889. His wife was Ida Purcell, she died two or three years earlier. Parthena (?) married Thomas Banto; Mary wife of John Bates; Ella and William are at home.
Bolen married Sophia "Sapha" Barnes on March 25, 1819 in Somerset, Pulaski County, Kentucky. Sophia "Sapha" Barnes was born on April 28, 1800 in Somerset, Pulaski County, Kentucky, died on March 3, 1862 in Somerset, Pulaski County, Kentucky, and was buried in the Old Stone Church Cemetery, Franklin Township, Des Moines County, Iowa."
